Artist Statement

In this art piece I drew a chess piece on a table. It is positioned on the corner of a table. The chess piece is realistic because of the dark value I integrated into it and because it is standing on a shelf, it is still and not moving. The proportion of the chess piece is quite big. It stands tall in front of the composition. This gives a sense of balance. The background is a pattern of a checked board. Dark value is used on the chess piece to create emphasis.

To make my chess piece visually appealing and not to position it in the centre of the art board I decided to put the chess piece on a wooden shelf on the side of the composition. This is where the rule of thirds comes in. I tried to put the chess piece in the centre vertically and more to the left square horizontally.

To make the chess piece stand out and to put emphasis on it I added a metallic look to it, using value. The metallic makes the chess piece look shinny and smooth apart form the rough background and the wooden textured shelf. This makes the chess piece stand out.

Daumier Group Art - Edited

This is an edited version of the Daumier group art we drew. I corrected the perspective of the image and adjusted a higher level of contrast to emphasize the texture of the charcoal and to display the artwork better and more clearly.
